What is Reiki? 🤲🏾⚡
Reiki is a Japanese-based energy healing technique that promotes relaxation and reduces stress and anxiety through gentle touch. Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or "laying hands", as we say in the South.
It is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is said to be transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing.
A Reiki treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you and it can also bring about emotional & suppressed releases. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki.

The Healing Touch: Reiki and the Southern Tradition of “Laying Hands”
As someone from the South and deeply rooted, both culturally and ancestrally - in the Southern church, I’d be remiss if I didn’t illuminate the connection between Reiki and the practice of "laying hands" from the Southern church. Both Reiki and “laying hands” is rooted in the shared principle of channeling energy or divine healing through touch.
In many Southern traditions, "laying hands" is a deeply cherished spiritual act performed during prayer or healing rituals, symbolizing the transfer of God's healing power / divine energy and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Similarly, Reiki uses touch to offer healing and comfort through the gentle touch of palm healing, channeling universal life force energy, which some may interpret as a divine or sacred energy.
While Reiki is not tied to any religion, its emphasis on healing through gentle touch resonates deeply with those familiar with the spiritual act of “laying hands”. For many in the South, this parallel makes Reiki feel familiar, bridging a cultural understanding of touch-based healing with a broader, universal approach to well-being.
Both practices remind us of the power of intentional touch to bring peace, balance, and renewal to the body and spirit.
By embracing Reiki, you’re engaging in a universal approach to healing that complements and honors the soulful traditions of Southern culture.
